Mobile deep links, app stores, and the graceful web fallback

How smart redirects can send installed users into the app while everyone else still lands somewhere useful.

Product teams want one marketing link to open the native app when it is installed and otherwise route to the store or a web experience. That usually means a redirect layer that inspects the request and chooses the next hop—without exposing fragile platform-specific URLs in ads.

Layer the experience

  • Primary — attempt the deep link or universal link path your app supports.
  • Secondary — App Store or Play listing with campaign parameters intact.
  • Tertiary — a mobile web page that explains value and offers install buttons.

Why a short URL helps

You can change routing logic when OS behavior shifts or when you ship a new app version, while email templates and printed QR codes stay unchanged. Centralizing that decision avoids hunting down hundreds of hard-coded store URLs.
