Using UTM parameters with short links without ugly URLs

How to tag campaigns for analytics while keeping public links clean, memorable, and easy to share.

Full tracking URLs stuffed with query strings work in spreadsheets, but they look fragile in slides, print, and social bios. Short links let you attach UTM-style campaign data on the server side or behind the redirect so the visible link stays tidy while your analytics still knows the source.

What to capture

  • Source and medium — distinguish newsletter, paid social, and partner placements without guessing from referrer noise.
  • Campaign name — aligns reporting with how your team names launches and seasonal pushes.
  • Content or variant — optional tags when you run multiple creatives to the same landing page.

Keeping links trustworthy

When the public face is a short branded path, people are more likely to tap or type it. You still get full funnel visibility by appending parameters only at redirect time or in your analytics layer—so the QR or SMS never exposes a long opaque string.
